Mishap on Hampton
An accident at the intersection of 45 Street and Hampton Boulevard left a few Old Dominion University students shaken.
The accident involving five students occurred at approximately 12:45 p.,m. The police, fire department and emergency medical response teams were on the scene within minutes.
ODU Golf team members Tim Ritter and Randall Jamison were headed south on Hampton Boulevard, in transit to the Jacobson Athletic Academic Center for practice.
Ritter was driving the beige 1999 Ford Explorer when the red Ford Focus entered the path of oncoming traffic resulting in the collision. Ritter said he was in the furthest right lane with an 18-wheeler semi-truck to his left in the middle lane. As he approached the intersection of 45th and Hampton, Ritter began to accelerate to pass the truck.
He said the semi obstructed his view and guessed such was the case for the driver of the Focus. He assumed she estimated adequate time to pass in front of the semi, but wasn’t able to account for Ritter’s vehicle as it was not visible.
Three females were in the Focus, two of which are ODU lacrosse players. The front seat passenger in the Focus sustained the greater of injuries, the specifics of which have not been disclosed. They have been taken to a local hospital for treatment.
