I hope everyone had a good first few weeks at school. I have a few updates and announcements from your Student Government!
The first to note is the election process is rapidly approaching. Applications are available via OSAL starting Feb. 6, and due March 1. There will be two informational sessions that are imperative. One session will be on the positions themselves and the other on the campaigning process. The first will be held on Feb. 7 in the James/Lynnhaven Room at 12:30 p.m. The second will be held on Feb. 28 in the Board of Visitors Room at 12:30 p.m.
Please come prepared with questions and ready to understand the requirements of running and the roles if elected. If you are interested in running for a specific position, please come by and see us in 1049 Webb Center, and we will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
A few events have occurred over the past few weeks including General Assembly Day, MLK Day of Service, a community clean up, and stuffed animals for military children and children in the community. General Assembly Day included lobbying on behalf of ODU for more state funding.
We hope to have another large-scale community service event in April to bring together our campus community for the greater good. We also hope to distribute window alarms to many off-campus students, who will hopefully feel safer within their respective communities.
Our most recent event was our “Clean Your Plate” pledge with Monarch Dining, which included educating and bringing awareness to students on how much cafeteria food is being wasted, how much money that is subsequently being wasted and how many children in need could be fed for that cost.
For those student organization leaders reading this, budget season is in full effect. Please contact either Otis Johnson, finance director or Marietta Medrana, treasurer for questions regarding the process. Budgets are due Feb. 8 but we have extended the deadline until Feb. 15. After Feb. 8 at 5 p.m. organizations are not eligible for a hearing. The hearings are not mandatory, and in no way affect your final allocation, if you have filled out the form appropriately.
Again, SGA week will start on the Feb. 18, so be on the lookout for publicity.
To all you seniors, nearly 100 days till graduation! Don’t forget to register for commencement.
