The Iguana opens its doors after its big renovation

Hampton Boulevard has always been home to businesses that keep the local students occupied. Luckily for ODU, the Night of the Iguana has stripped its name to just The Iguana and has been focusing more on this effort. Since  its grand re-opening, The Iguana has switched over managers and menus. The Iguana now serves for less and has plenty of special deals, performances, and a variety of live entertainment.

Music lovers will be delighted to know that Friday and Saturday nights at The Iguana are usually booked for local and upcoming bands that are building a name for themselves.  Starting in May, The Iguana will bring back the Iguana Laughs, a comedy event that runs in sequence with their College Night every Wednesday. This event will be  hosted by Channing Tyner; a local comedian and entertainer who initally started doing open mic workshop shows.

Tyner also has two television credits under her belt. The weekly comedy event will have a $5 cover charge, $3 for students, and will feature food specials; like tacos, wings, and draft beers for under a dollar.  After seven funny, locally known acts showcase their talents. The event will end with a DJ set. Some of the comedians that have previously performed at the Iguana Laughs   include  Derek Williams, Elsa Waithe ‘E’, Remus Borisov, Dave Rudabaub, Joseph DePaul, who is also a magician, and Susan Sussman.

Each week will bring a different set of performers, by adding to the ever-changing atmosphere of The Iguana. The Iguana is committed to creating a fun environment for students looking for laughs and a good time, but within their budget. Due to this reality, comedians are chosen with consideration towards who can relate to students.

Since The Iguana has committed itself to being a hub for live entertainment, Tyner proposed the venue also feature a comedy show. In addition to a comedy show, there also will be a weekly contest. Which will give audience members the opportunity to perform a 60-second comedy routine.  This would be the only comedy show in Norfolk and would solidify The Iguana’s title as a great place for students who want to laugh and have a good time.

Anyone interested in finding more about the events and comedy can visit facebook.com/channingisfunny and facebook.com/theiguanahamptonblvd until the official website is relaunched.
