The Battle for Norfolk: Monarchs vs Spartans
By De’Andre Taylor
On Saturday, September 12, the Old Dominion Monarchs will face off against their hometown rivals, the Norfolk State Spartans, for the battle of Norfolk.
Foreman Field will be the battleground for these two teams as a sellout crowd witnesses this game. Last time the Monarchs and the Spartans squared off in the 2013 season, it ended with Old Dominion kicking a game winning field goal in the final seconds (27-24). The Monarchs also went undefeated at home in the 2013 season and will try to do the same this season against the Spartans.
The Monarchs will be entering their second season in Division I-A football after a 6-6 record last season. Old Dominion ranked 56th in total offense (5,303) and 30th in passing yards (3,510) in their first season in Division I-A.
The Norfolk State Spartans finished 4-8 last season and 4-4 in the Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference.
Old Dominion (1-0) won their first game of the season against Eastern Michigan (38-34) on Saturday, with the help of running back Ray Lawry who totaled 223 yards and 4 touchdowns. Norfolk State (0-1) was hammered by Rutgers University (63-13). Norfolk State’s defense had a hard time stopping Rutgers’ offense. Expect Old Dominion to run heavy against Norfolk State.
Old Dominion is currently 2-0 against Norfolk State, winning both games back in 2011 and 2013. As this will be the third time these two teams will meet on the battlefield, expect a great game out of these two clubs. Let the battle begin this upcoming Saturday.
