Lady Monarch Soccer Falls to Rice 2-0
Old Dominion Women’s soccer took on the Owls of Rice University on Friday night. The Monarchs, ranked eighth in Conference USA (4-9-0), started a four game home series with a loss against Rice, third in the conference. Rice (7-5-1) came to Old Dominion looking for the win, pressing hard from the beginning.
Old Dominion was able to get six shots on goal but these six shots resulted in no goals. Rice’s first goal came in the 52nd minute of the game, headed in by Samantha Chaiken from a free kick from Lauren Hughes. The Monarchs fate was sealed with another goal by Rice five minutes later in the 57th minute from Rice’s Dominique Mazero off of a cross.
“Well if you look at the scoreboard the only thing that’s not even is the score line. You know, I don’t think there was much in the game but we gave away a couple of quite soft goals and that was disappointing,” Head Coach Angie Hind said.
The Owls were the first in series of four Conference USA teams to be played at home before heading on the road. The Monarchs still face several strong teams later in the schedule, especially current conference leaders Middle Tennessee in the last home game of the season.
“We’re in a conference that’s a competitive conference. Every game is pretty close, so for us we really just focus on the next game and we certainly look forward to doing well,” Hind said.
