On a night where most are satisfied with themed house parties, crowds of costumed characters chose to head to the NorVa for the hybrid Halloween costume party and concert, Fantastic Planet. With performers such as DJ Vashtie, a 103 Jamz radio host, Dominique da Diva and Virginia-native producer Lakim, the show received a consistent buzz amongst online circles as the place to be for Halloween this year.

During Fantastic Planet’s ten-year existence, the NorVa is the second venue to house the event due to consistent growth in attendance. This year, the show packed both floors of the venue.

Fantastic Planet was full of interesting costumes and tremendous energy. Local musicians Fake Uzumi and Opal opened the show with electrifying performances that broke through the concert jitters and got the crowd ready to move. DJ Froxstarr took to the stage with a mix that included crowd favorites “Cha Cha” by D.R.A.M and its controversial counterpart “Hotline Bling” by Drake.

The songs pumped up the crowd and immediately got everyone dancing and singing along. DJ Froxxstar even left her booth to take center stage and dance amongst attendees.

The rap collective RBLE used their hard-hitting beats and aggressive vocals to ignite the crowd into an uproar of jumping, photo-snapping fans. Their guerilla style of performance had all hands on deck with friends of the group dancing and shouting all over the stage, including the masked radio personality Dominique da Diva.

The experimental duo, Sunny and Gabe, followed RBLE and maintained the venue’s high energy. Producer Gabe Niles dressed as a time traveling cyborg from the early 1900’s while he and Sunny pulled off a smooth set of the duo’s most well-known hits.

DJ Vashtie took to the stage along with surprise guest Pusha T, but the Virginia native and rap icon was only there to enjoy the show. Vashtie immediately began spinning a feel-good mix of classic hip-hop hits. The warmth of nostalgia filled the hall and the crowd continued to dance. Lakim followed the set with a mix comprised of newer hits mixed with his signature bounce sound.

Throughout the night, the NorVa was brimming with Halloween spirit. Fantastic Planet is known for bringing a unique music experience to Virginia with their wide variety of artists and styles. The event was successful as the highly energetic crowd and musicians came together to party the night away. Fantastic Planet puts a new spin on Halloween in downtown Norfolk.
