Men's Basketball Gets Third Straight Win
Old Dominion Men’s Basketball came into the game on Wednesday night riding a 26-game win streak at the Ted and was looking to extend the fifth longest home streak against the Morgan State Bears. The Bears were off to the worst start possible as they had dropped their first two games of the season.
The Men’s Basketball team extended that streak to 27 as they got a comfortable 79-48 win. Contributions from a few of the newcomers of this team helped ODU cruise to victory.
The Bears started hot taking a 9-2 lead on the Monarchs, the biggest deficit they have faced this season. But the lack of height hurt Morgan State earlier as Denzell Taylor looked like he was grabbing anything and everything that hit the rim, finishing with 10 rebounds and 12 points, recording his first double-double of the season.
Freeman was contained the majority of the game, only scoring 11 on eight shots but pulling down seven boards. Baker, on the other hand, was shut down the entire game, going 0-5 with four of those shots coming from behind the arc, and only being able to hit 1-2 from the charity stripe.
Kyle Thomas for the Bears played all 40 minutes, an impressive mark, dropped 15 of his team’s measly 48 points, and grabbed seven of the 25 total rebounds they got. That was 17 rebounds less than the Monarchs, who mounted an immaculate 42 boards. Thomas was the only bright spot for the Bears, but what will be remembered most from their trip to the Ted was the fiery tirade from Coach Bozeman, who received a technical foul midway through the first half before exploding and looking as though the officiating crew may eject him from the game.
The ejection might have been a critical point in the game as it looked as though the game was slipping away from his team, and their coach getting tossed may have sparked a run. But after walking up and down the bench yelling nonsense, he regained his composure and was quiet the rest of the game.
Aaron Bacote on the other hand was making quite a bit of noise as he flooded the scoreboard with 22 points going 8-15 and only playing 24 minutes.
With a big game on Saturday against Purdue, it was crucial for ODU to bully the weaker Morgan State Bears from a morale stand point. Getting Bacote to build up his confidence before the big game was key because even though Freeman had an off night, he should have his A-game ready when Saturday rolls around.
A possible big loss for the Monarchs is Brandan Stith with a possible knee or ankle injury. He went down grimacing in pain with about five minutes left in the game. He is scheduled for an MRI on Thursday and ODU fans are hoping for the best.
