ODU Loses Dual Meets on Sunday

ODU lost both meets in their double header Sunday afternoon, 19-2 to Eastern Michigan University and 19-18 to American University.

“It was very disappointing for us because both of these meets we could have won today,” ODU head coach Steve Martin said. “In the first meet, we gave up two losses in the last five seconds. That was pretty much that dual meet.”

In the first meet against EMU, No. 11, Jack Dechow at 184 opened with a 5-3 decision to put the Monarchs up 3-0. But the Eagles won the next two matches, one by major decision and the second by a controversial 4-3 decision at 285.  It looked as if the Monarchs’ 285 lbs wrestler, Austin Coburn, turned and held his opponent long enough to receive two points, but even after a challenge from Martin, the referee maintained the call, leaving the Monarchs down 7-3.

“I thought I had back points,” said Coburn, who is 4-1 since bumping up to 285.

Brandon Jeske’s decision brought the Monarchs back to within one, but the Eagles won the next two matches including an upset victory over the ODU’s No. 13 Chris Mecate. The teams split the last four matches with No. 8 Alexander Richardson and freshman Seldon Wright scoring decisions for the Monarchs, but it wasn’t enough to catch the Eagles. EMU won 19-12.

In the second meet of the day, ODU lost to American 19-18 despite winning six of the 10 match-ups.

“We gave up bonus points. We won six matches to four, but obviously no one was putting up bonus points,” Martin said.

Jack Dechow earned his second win of the day with a 6-3 decision. Austin Coburn earned a 4-3 decision at heavyweight, and sophomore Josh Markham won his first career dual meet win with a commanding 12-5 decision at 133. However, American earned two pins, one at 197 and another at 125, to give the Eagles a 12-9 lead halfway through the second dual meet.

Despite No. 8 Richardson earning his second decision, Wright knocking off Mitchell Wightman for his second overtime win of the day and Brooks Climmons adding another overtime decision, American cemented their 19-18 win with one decision at 141 and another major decision at 157.

“We are not happy with our dual meet losses. It’s very frustrating to see the “L”s come up. We could have wrestled better in multiple matches out there today,” Martin said.

The Monarchs have only two dual meets left for the season, one on Friday, Feb. 19 at 7:30 p.m. against Northern Illinois at the Ted Constant Center and another against Central Michigan on Sunday, Feb. 21 at 1:00 p.m. in the Jim Jarrett Gymnasium for senior day.
