Old Dominion lost their final dual meet of the season 21-15 in front of an intense home crowd at the intimate Jim Jarrett Gymnasium against 19th ranked Central Michigan in a meet that came down to the final seconds.

“I’m really pleased with the fight in our guys today,” assistant coach Alex Dolly. “We didn’t come out on top, [Central Michigan] is a good team. I’m happy with the atmosphere, and the way our guys wrestled.”

ODU’s No 11 Jack Dechow kicked the match off with a 4-3  decision over Jordan Ellingwood at 184. Dechow scored three points in the third period and won on riding time to secure his come from behind victory.

“My mentality is that I’m going to score the last point… I’m going to find a way to win,” Dechow said.

The Chippewas responded by winning the next two matches to take a 6-3 lead. The first an 8-2 decision at 197, and the second a 5-3 decision where CMU bumped Jackson Lewis up from 197 to face ODU’s Austin Coburn who only recently moved up to heavyweight himself.

CMU forfeited to Brandon Jeske at 125 lbs and gave the Monarchs a 9-6 lead, but ODU’s Josh Markham got caught in a headlock and pinned in the first minute by Corey Keener to regain the Chippewa lead at the midpoint of the meet.

No 16 Chris Mecate beat his second ranked opponent in three days scoring a takedown in the waning seconds of overtime to take a 3-1 decision over rival No 14 Zach Horan, and tied the meet at 12-12.

“It was a good match,” Mecate said. “Me and Horan have had battles, I think we’re tied 2-2 now.”

ODU’s No 8 Alexander Richardson lost 5-4 in an exciting match to No 9 Justin Oliver, and No 16 Luke Smith won a 3-0 decision over Devin Geoghegan to put the Chippewas up by six heading into the last two matches of the day.

At 165 lbs, Freshman Seldon Wright  earned his fourth straight victory in a 5-3 decision over Colin Heffernan, who is ranked 13th in the 149 lbs weight class, and brought the Monarchs to within three points.

The meet came down to a heated, and thrilling matchup at 174lbs. Redshirt freshman Jared Swan nearly upended CMU’s No 8 Mike Ottinger, but the senior scored a takedown late in the final period to secure the win for the Chippewas.

With the dual meet season over, the Monarchs will now focus on the tournaments. The MAC tournament will be held in Ypsilanti, MI, at Eastern Michigan University March 5-6.
