Although going to classes, completing assignments and studying for exams is a big part of the college experience, so is socializing and partying. When going out and drinking, one should take special precautions. That is where the DrunkMode app comes in handy.
DrunkMode has been around for about three years as an app, and two years as a business. The app was created by 25-year-old Joshua Anton, who is the CEO of the app development team. He started college at Northern Virginia Community College, where he graduated with his associate degree in business administration degree, and then went to the University of Virginia, where he graduated with a bachelor’s in commerce with a concentration in marketing and IT.
He had four goals, which were writing and publishing a book, building an app, starting a public speaking firm and figuring out how to market anything he wanted. He has been successful in achieving these goals. He published a book called Investing: Blunt and to the Point in 2012. Anton was also featured in a commercial for Unilever on defying the millennial stereotype.
Anton was inspired to create the DrunkMode application the night of a UVA Block Party in 2012 after he himself had been drunkenly called by a crush. It took about nine months to get the app out there, but he and his team were very hardworking and determined.
According to its site, the DrunkMode app is, “the app that helps you get crazy and stay safe.” The goal of the app is to make everyone’s night out safe, while allowing for maximum good times. Having over 1.3 million downloads, the app is great for being responsible and safe when drinking, as well as keeping track of your drunk friends. It is continuously growing in popularity and has about 30,000-50,000 new users every month.
Features include the ability to block your contacts, track your friends, find hot spots, and locate a ride home. The blocking your contact feature, “Stop Drunk Dialing”, allows you to select and add phone contacts to a call-blocker list which prevents you from making calls to certain people.
The track your friends feature, “Find My Drunk”, allows you to find your friends through GPS to make sure they are safe, as well as ensuring that you don’t lose them when you are out partying. The “Find a Safe Ride Home” features helps you quickly find a ride home and also shows you the walking directions to your friends’ locations.
Anton’s future plans include further developing an app called “X-Mode,” which maps life, and combines information online and offline to bring people together. According to Anton, “X-Mode” is “Mapping powered by humanity, to empower humanity.” When asked what his other goals and ambitions were, he said, “When I die on a rocking chair 50-70 years from now, I want to leave a legacy that I had some influence in helping solve the alternative energy and water issues of today. By solving these issues, we could help some of the big issues of today from world wars, to famine to disease.”
The app is available on Google Play, the iTunes App Store and the Android Market. For more information, visit the app’s website.
