Duhart Hauls in Two TD'S to Secure a Homecoming Victory
Homecoming came a little earlier this year for the Monarchs, but Coach Wilder and the ODU football team were ready for the challenge. ODU was in control for the entirety of the homecoming game, defeating the University of Texas at San Antonia 33-19.
UTSA came to town sitting on a two-game losing streak, putting their record at 1-2. The Monarchs were also coming off two straight road losses, and were hoping to rebound at home on the big night. With a tough C-USA schedule ahead, a win would do wonders for the quest of a bowl game invite.
The stadium was packed to the brim with students and alumni ready to see their Monarchs get back on the winning track. It started on a good foot for ODU. They were able to move the ball down the field with ease for the majority of the first drive before stalling late and having to punt. With a couple of back and forth possessions, ODU was able to strike first, but failed to convert the extra point.
UTSA answered early in the second quarter and converted on their extra point to give them a 7-6 lead over the Monarchs leaving the crowd stunned. This would be the only lead the Road Runners would hold.
David Washington orchestrated a late second quarter drive resulting in a two-yard rushing touchdown. Carrying that momentum into halftime was huge for ODU, giving them confidence and drawing the crowd back in to what was a seemingly boring game.
ODU came out of the half on a roll stopping UTSA and going down the field scoring another six points, again failing to convert on the extra point.
The Monarchs let the Road Runners march down the field, but held strong, only giving up a field goal. ODU responded with a touchdown reception by Jonathan Duhart in the back of the end zone, which gave ODU a two-possession lead, 25-14. Duhart finished the game with 6 catches for 86 yards and two touchdowns.
The Road Runners were able to get a late third quarter touchdown but failed to put up any points in the fourth quarter.
ODU will be back on the field Oct. 1 in North Carolina to play the Charlotte 49ers.
