With a 2-1 overtime win over Florida Atlantic (4-10-1, C-USA 2-6) the Monarchs (5-7-2, C-USA 2-4-1) clinched the final spot in the Conference USA tournament that will take place Nov. 9-13 at Marshall University. After an up and down regular season, ODU has to win the single-elimination conference tournament to clinch a spot in the NCAA tournament.

Although ODU took nine shots in the first half they could not get the ball into the back of the net and the game was scoreless at halftime. In the 53rd minute of the match redshirt freshmen Jimmy Filerman scored an unassisted goal to put Monarchs ahead 1-0. Filerman gathered the ball after a few Owls defenders failed to clear the ball out of the box for his first career goal.

FAU did not let the goal get them down as they scored 11 minutes later. Braxton Fuster crossed the ball to David Adejunmobi who found Carlos Sanchis in the front of the net to tie the game 1-1.

The rest of regulation went without a score and so did the first overtime period. ODU was able to get off five shots in the first overtime but couldn’t capitalize. At the 102nd minute mark, Sebastian Hauret passed in a 40-yard free kick that freshmen Kaio DaSilva headed into the top right corner of the goal to win the game.

During the match ODU outshot FAU in every category: total shots 27 to nine, shots on goal 11 to two, and corner kicks nine to five. Niko Klosterhalfen didn’t score but put pressure on the Owls defense the entire match with his team-leading nine shots. DaSilva attempted eight shots while both Filerman and Hauret shot three times.

Monarch goalie Alex Tiesenhausen had a quite night finishing with just one save and holding FAU to just one goal. On the other hand, FAU’s Goalie Phillip Hitpass was under constant pressure but he managed to collect nine saves in the 102 minutes of action.

ODU will be back in action Nov. 9 in their fourth straight Conference USA tournament appearance.
