ODU ended their Texas road swing on a good note, taking down North Texas 73-67 Saturday at the Super Pit. Despite being winless in conference play, the Mean Green hung in the game until the final minutes. The back and forth contest included 10 lead changes and nine ties. With the win, ODU is now 7-0 all-time against North Texas.

Zoran Talley and Ahmad Caver carried the load for the Monarch offense. Talley amassed 18 points, six rebounds and three assists, while Caver added 18 points, five rebounds and four assists.

“We rode Zoran Talley almost the whole afternoon at the offensive end. I thought Ahmad Caver did a terrific job playing the entire 40 minutes, he made some big shots and free-throws. This certainly wasn’t an easy win and we didn’t expect it to be an easy win, but we are very happy with the result,” ODU head coach Jeff Jones said.

The Monarchs (13-8, 6-3 C-USA) have struggled this season to finish games at the free throw line but in the last minute of this contest, they made all eight free throws they attempted.

“This one wasn’t pretty but our guys kept hanging in there throughout the course of the game. We never really could get much separation until right at the end. We had some guys step up and make some big plays,” Jones said.

ODU senior guard Jordan Baker returned from his one-game suspension and scored eight points. North Texas (6-15, 0-9 C-USA) shot 43 percent from the field while ODU shot 48 percent.

At halftime, ODU led 30-27. With just under 13 minutes remaining in the second half, the score was tied 41-41 after a B.J. Stith slam.

J-Mychal Reese led North Texas with 17 points.

Mean Green center Rickey Brice Jr. made two free throws to cut the Monarchs lead to 63-62 with 2:40 remaining. Talley immediately countered with jumper and ODU held the lead for the remainder of the game.

“Anytime you can win a conference game on the road is big,” Jones said.

ODU will be back in The Ted hosting FIU on Feb. 2 at 7 p.m.
