Following a historic run last year, the Lady Monarchs lacrosse team opened up the season on the road with two wins against VCU and Campbell University. ODU defeated the Rams 10-7 at Cary Street field. Junior midfielder Cydney Tutchton led the Lady Monarchs with three goals and added one assist. Her teammate Morgan Marrale had a game-high three assists and senior goalkeeper Maggi Buckley started her season off on the right note with nine saves on 21 shots.
The Rams got on the scoreboard first with a goal by Molly Barcikowski five minutes into the first half but the Lady Monarchs responded a minute later to tie the game at one. At the half, ODU led 5-4 and outshot VCU 15-11.
VCU would score first in the second half to tie the score back up. Lady Monarch senior attacker Colby Mueller would score two goals in 35 seconds to regain the lead at 7-5. The Rams would cut the lead to one once again but goals by Connor Carson, Megan Topper and Tutchton put the game away.
ODU’s (2-0) second game of the season was a nail biter as they scored twice in the final minute in an 11-10 win over the Cambell University Fighting Camels (0-2). Preseason All-Conference selection Connor Carson had her first hat trick of the season, while Tutchton and Natalie Ledwitz contributed two goals apiece.
Maggi Buckley was solid in net once again with nine saves on the 28 shots she faced. The Lady Monarchs started off hot leading 5-1 after a goal by Topper with 16:08 remaining in the first half. Cambell would battle back into the contest in the scoring three times in final 11 minutes of the half to bring the score to 5-4.
Less than two minutes into the second half Campbell’s Kayla Reilly scored an unassisted goal to tie the game at 5-5. The back in forth scoring would continue as the Carson scored to put the Lady Monarchs back in front 6-5 before the Fighting Camels scored the next two goals to taking a 7-6 lead. ODU responded to that run by scoring three consecutive goals taking a 9-7 lead with 12:10 seconds to play.
It seemed like the Lady Monarchs had taken Campbell’s last punch but the Fighting Camels bounced back scoring three more times to take a 10-9 lead with 2:10 left on the clock. ODU would score twice in a 44-second span to clinch their victory. Tutchton knocked home the game-winning goal with just 19 seconds left.
They will be back in action on the road against Virginia Tech Feb. 25 at 1 p.m.
