Monarchs Shut Out LIU Brooklyn
Harry Howard Jr.
The ODU baseball team hosted LIU Brooklyn in their season opener at the Bud Metheney Baseball Complex and shutout the Blackbirds 13-0. Their 13 runs were the most that they’ve scored in a season opener since 2006 when they scored 16.
The Monarchs managed to get 12 of their runs across the plate in the first three innings of the game. Senior Nick Walker started at third base and went 3-for-5 at the plate with four runs batted in finishing the game just a home run shy of the cycle. Junior Jared Young was ODU’s second-most productive hitter going 2-for-4 with a triple, two runs, and two runs batted in.
Although LIU Brooklyn did not score they had a couple of chances to get men across home plate. In the first inning, Blackbird sophomore Joe Mercadante lined a single up the middle and then found his way to second base after a sacrifice bunt. With a runner in scoring position, Monarch starting pitcher Adam Bainbridge tightened up and got two consecutive outs to get out of the inning.
Senior catcher Kurt Sinner hit the first Monarch home run of the season in the third inning where the offense erupted for seven runs.
ODU’s Lefty Bainbridge pitched five scoreless innings, striking out five batters, and giving up just two hits. Jim Wilkerson and Isaiah Nelson pitched two innings each in relief striking out three batters and giving up just one base hit.
In the top of the third inning, the Blackbirds once again looked poised to score after Bainbridge walked Charles Misiano with one out in the inning. Following the walk, Mercandante hit a double down the left field line to put him and Misiano into scoring position. Once again Bainbridge stepped up when he was needed striking out the next two LIU Brooklyn batters to end the inning.
Right fielder Turner Bishop made the play of the game on a diving catch in the second inning. It eventually ended up being the No. 7 play in SportsCenter top plays.
