Following an impressive 4-1 win in their regular season opener against George Mason on Friday, the Lady Monarchs Women’s Soccer team remained undefeated in their opening weekend with a 3-0 victory over the University of Albany. The first half kept Monarch fans on edge as both teams were making aggressive drives to the goals. Eventually, the Lady Monarchs conquered the Lady Danes by scoring two goals in the second half to seal their victory shutout over Albany.
“I think right from the start we controlled the game,” said head coach Angie Hind. “We moved the ball well tonight, we created opportunities and we were patient, so I was really pleased.”
Through their first 2 games of the season, the Lady Monarchs have outscored their opponents 7-1.The match began in an aggressive manner with Mariah Williams of the University of Albany taking at the 1:49 mark, however, her attempt was too wide. This early pressure did not phase the Lady Monarchs which was made evident after the 8:39 mark when goalkeeper Krista Moisio made a fantastic save to keep the score 0-0. During Moisio’s 90 minutes of play, she obtained four saves.
ODU’s first goal attempt came at 10:41 from senior captain Deidre Bradley, unfortunately, it hit the crossbar but it provided the Lady Monarch with motivation to play harder.
The game became relatively hectic at the 31-minute mark as the Lady Danes took back to back shots. Both teams seemed to be evenly matched as neither had managed to score until Albany was charged with an aggressive foul which resulted in the Lady Monarchs being awarded a penalty kick by game officials. Jackie Stroud took the shot and scored giving them their 1-0 lead at the 32:19 mark. Albany’s frustration became evident shortly before halftime when player Clair Urquhart was given a yellow card. The Lady Danes totaled four yellow cards by the end of the match.
ODU entered halftime with seven total shots, four fouls, two shots on goal, two saves and one corner kick. While Albany maintained six total shots, two shots on goal, a whopping eight fouls, 2 yellow cards and 1 save. Possession time was even at 50% for each team.
The Lady Monarchs came out energized during the second half with two shot attempts early in the period. Albany was desperate to prevent ODU’s goal attempt but eventually caused the Lady Danes more fouling trouble. At 58:26 Iris Achterhof received her first goal of the season on an assist from Talia Tapper putting the Lady Monarchs further ahead with a 2-0 lead. At 63.42, Morgan Hall tried to lengthen the Lady Monarchs lead but her shot was too high over the goal post.
Jackie Stroud made an effort to get her second goal of the match with a header, but goalkeeper for the Lady Danes, Sophia Chen, successfully prevented her attempt adding to her total saves (4). ODU’s Emily Roberts assisted a goal completed by Morgan Hall to seal the Lady Monarch’s triumph over the Lady Danes. This is Hall’s first goal of the season. Before the final whistle, Sophia Eifler, of the Lady Danes, made a valiant effort to get her team on the board but ultimately fell short sealing the Lady Monarch shutout.
In total, ODU had 17 total shots, 10 fouls, seven shots on goal, six corner kicks, four saves and 0 yellow. While Albany had 12 fouls, 10 total shots, four shots on goal, four yellow cards, four saves and two corner kicks.
