Last night the Lady Monarchs outworked Western Kentucky in their first Conference USA matchup finishing with a 1-0 victory. The only goal of the night would come at 105th minute by the prolific sophomore Kyra Ricks.
Ricks was able to reel in a rebound off a shot from teammate Iris Achterhof to win the nail-biting match. This victory brings the Lady Monarchs record to 3-2-2 and also makes them 1-0 in conference play. Additionally, this match was awarded Game of the Week as well as being broadcasted live on beIN Network.
The Lady Monarchs stormed the field firing on all cylinders with four shots attempts in the first 11 minutes of play. By halftime neither the Lady Monarchs or Lady Toppers could gain an advantage. The score remained gridlocked at zero. The Lady Monarchs took six shots on goal while WKU only attempted three. Each goalkeeper performed one save a piece.
Coach Hind was fairly impressed with her team she exclaimed that, “In overtime, I thought we really stepped it up, I said to the players ‘how do you feel’ and they said ‘we want to go.’ They dictate the game and, fair enough to them, they were outstanding.”
The Lady Monarchs were more aggressive with their shots on goal taking 21 in comparison to the nine attempt by WKU. Ultimately, the game was about defensive play, neither team could gain a true advantage until the second period of overtime.
Throughout the evening players on both sides were able to intercept passes and block shots that could have been turned into points. Both goalies played exceptionally, with Krista Moisio pulling four saves for the Lady Monarchs.
The Lady Monarchs have a short turnaround with their next match set for this Sunday September 17th. ODU will travel to Richmond to face off against the University of Richmond at 6 pm. This win over WKU makes 352 minutes since the last time ODU allowed a goal to be scored on them. Hopefully the momentum of this match will continue on Sunday.
