New iPhones, Apple Watch Series 3 Details Unveiled

Audra Reigle | Technology Editor

Apple held their first event in the new Steve Jobs Theater in California on Sept. 12. Not only was their new theater unveiled, but they also released information about three new iPhones and the next series of Apple Watch.

The iPhone X is unlike Apple’s previous phones. It does not have a home button, so users will have to swipe up from the bottom to access the home screen. Users will be able to move between apps by swiping along the bottom. The control center was moved to the top and can be accessed by swiping down from the top of the screen where the status icons are. The phone has a 5.8-inch display that goes from top to bottom.

Users can unlock the phone using Face ID. During the first time set up of the iPhone X, the user’s face will be scanned. This will allow users to unlock the phone by simply looking at it. It will still recognize your face regardless of how it changes or what you’re wearing. Face ID will also work with Apple Pay and third-party apps.

Animoji will allow users to create and record messages with emojis through Apple Messages. The iPhone X will come in space gray and silver. A 64 GB and a 256 GB version will be available starting at $999. Orders will start Oct. 27, and the phone will be available Nov. 3.

The iPhone 8 and 8+ were also unveiled at the event. The iPhone 8 offers a 4.7-inch display, and the iPhone 8+ offers a 5.5-inch display. It will have a 12-megapixel camera with a new color filter, and the iPhone 8+ will offer photo retouching. The phones will come in silver, gold and space gray, and there will be a 64 GB and a 256 GB version. The iPhone 8 will start at $699, and the iPhone 8+ will start at $799.

Apple Watch Series 3 was designed so that you don’t have to take your phone with you. It will offer cellular services, and Siri will be able to talk to you. It is the same size as the Series 2 watches, but the back crystal was expanded slightly. The cases will come in gold, space gray and silver, and there will be a variety of bands to choose from. A version without cellular can be purchased starting at $329, and a version with cellular can be purchased starting at $399.

Orders for the iPhone 8, iPhone 8+ and Apple Watch series 3 are open now, and they will launch Sept. 22.
