After a gut wrenching loss Saturday against William and Mary, the Monarchs showed off against University of Maryland Eastern Shore Monday night in the Ted Center. All eyes were on the Monarchs as they tramped UMES winning 83-44.
While UMES attempted to defensively corner the Monarchs, they were no match for their offensive drive. Heading into halftime the Monarchs led UMES 37-14. During the first half the Monarchs displayed an unusually fast pace offensive game to match the full court pressure by UMES.
The Monarchs held a 69% (9-13) free throw percentage. Although their field goal and rebound percentages were low, the monarchs team cohesion and 3-point shots gave them a competitive edge in the first half.
“It was nice to get the William & Mary game behind us. It is good to get the win and we had a lot of different guys contribute. Now we can turn the page and start thinking and preparing for VCU.”
Overall, B.J. Stith led the monarchs with 14 points and six rebounds. Offensive point leaders included Michael Hueitt Jr. (12), Xavier Green (11) and Trey Porter (10). Defensively Freshman Michael Hueitt Jr. led with nine rebounds. Additionally, Hueitt Jr. marked a career high 12 points and three assists.
As the Monarchs lead continued to grow head coach Jeff Jones moved down the bench subbing in various Monarchs. Frequently subbed in players included Aaron Carver, and Marquis Godwin. With time dwindling down Jones gave Stephen Vassor (6pts), Keith Pinckney (2pts) and Alfias Pilavios time to shine.
The Monarchs will travel to Richmond on Saturday to face off against their long term rivals Virginia Commonwealth University. The game will be televised on MASN at 7pm for the Siegel Center. In the last five matchups between the two, ODU has only clenched one victory making a win on saturday evening imperative.
