Last Thursday’s matchup between the Monarchs and the Roadrunners, ODU managed to shoot lights out and put on a shooting clinic. Especially BJ Stith, who went on to break a Division I school record for most points in the first half with 28. Stith ended the game with a career-high 36 points. It was an efficient night for the redshirt junior, shooting 11-17 from the field, 4-8 from behind the arc, and a perfect 10-10 from the charity stripe. Stith also ripped down ten rebounds.
To add to the already record-setting night, for the first time since the 1998-1999 season the Monarchs scored 100 points in a regular season contest. This was the 15th win in the last 17 games for the team; they are heating up at the most convenient time of the season.
Coach Jeff Jones had high praises for his high scoring guard and the rest of his squad as well. “B.J was phenomenal from the opening tip, but so was the rest of our team. Our guys were ready for this opportunity tonight.”
Three other Monarchs had stellar nights scoring in double digits. Xavier Green went off for a career-high 17 points along with seven rebounds and two assists. Ahmad Caver recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 assists, while Randy Haynes pitched in 16 points in just 14 minutes of action.
For the game, the ODU shot 52.4% from the floor, 57.7% from three and 79.2% from the charity stripe. The monarchs never trailed during the contest and held advantages over their opponent in points off turnovers, rebounds, turnovers, and steals.
Coach Jones hopes they will come down off their emotional high and excitement from this impressive outing and focus on preparing for their next contests.
