The season is early, and the Monarchs are off to a scorching 8-2 record. This includes scoring 31 runs against non-conference opponent the Yale Bulldogs over the weekend.
The team begins their season with a dynamic outfield led by senior Kyle Battle, who ,throughout the first week, is batting .361 which goes along with six bases on balls that show great plate discipline and provide a astounding on base percentage. Sophomore Ryan Teschko is generating power this early going with two home-runs and driving in twelve runs.
One can see the depth throughout the whole lineup, which also showcases Robbie Petracci, who doesn't use a batting glove, something not often seen anymore. Factor in how well the pitching has been and the Monarchs have a chance to do some real damage this year in the conference and improve on their 35-21 record from last year, 16-14 in Conference USA.
The pitching staff has compiled 118 strikeouts to 42 bases on balls so far this year, which is the result of executing their pitches and the starting staff absorbing a good amount of innings. Nick Pantos, Hunter Gregory and Ryne Moore collectively are 5-2 with an earned run average below three and 58 strikeouts. Head Coach Chris Finwood is in his ninth season as manager of the Monarchs and looks to build on his success here at ODU.
The Monarchs remain home this upcoming week as they face VMI for a solo game, Rutgers University for three, and then finishing their home play with in-town rivalry Norfolk State for one game.
Conference play will begin Friday March 13th, when ODU hosts Florida Atlantic. Bud Metheny Baseball Stadium seats 2,500 fans and on March 14th, there is a T-shirt giveaway for both the first 100 students and 100 fans. Tickets are still available, and nothing beats Spring baseball, hotdogs and supporting your Old Dominion Monarchs.
