On Friday, ODU announced that President Broderick’s spot as President of the university will be filled by Brian Hemphill, the current president of Radford University. This was a unanimous decision made by ODU’s Board of Vistors after an almost year-long search for Broderick’s successor.

Despite having big shoes to fill, Hemphill has a long list of experience working in leadership for higher education, with some of his previous positions being president of West Virginia University and Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management at Northern Illinois University.

Hemphill graduated from St. Augustine University in 1992 with a degree in organizational communication, then another degree in journalism and mass communication from the University of Iowa in 1994, before receiving his Ph.D. in higher education administration and policy studies from the University of Iowa.

In the official announcement sent out by Assistant Vice President for Strategic Communication and Marketing, Giovanna Genard, the new president is planning on “bring[ing] a strong student-centered leadership style, a continued commitment to diversity and inclusion, and a history of shared governance.”

Hemphill will take over this position over the summer, after spending the upcoming Spring months working alongside Broderick.

Broderick has been President of the University for the past thirteen years, in that time he has earned multiple awards for his leadership and dedication to creating a diverse and equitable community at Old Dominion. Some of these awards include American College Personnel Association's Contribution to Higher Education Award, Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities' Humanitarian Award, and the College Communicators Association Distinguished Service Award.

Be sure to tune in on Feb. 19 for a virtual event in which Hemphill will introduce himself to the ODU Community.
