Men's Soccer Drops Conference USA Opener
Old Dominion’s men’s soccer team (3-2-1) hosted 9th ranked Charlotte 49ers (4-0-0) in the Conference USA opener. The 49ers ultimately came out on top, with a final score of 2-0.
When asked about the game said Coach Alan Dawson said, “Yeah, typical conference game. Very tight particularly early in the game, very frantic, and not a lot of chances by either team.”
49ers junior Harrison Steadman scored the first goal of the match with just under five minutes remaining in the first half. Steadman would also go on to score the 2nd and final goal for the 49ers.
Both teams exercised great defense, which was shown through their back and forth quarrels midfield. Though the workload was light for the goalies, their results would mirror each other in the ways of saves. Elliot Panicco of Charlotte had 2 saves and no goals while Alex Tiesenhausen had 3 saves and 2 goals.
Other standout players from the game were Jesse Miralrio and Jimmy Filerman. Miralrio had 4 shots on target, 1 shot on goal, and he played for the entirety of the game thus rendering him the Man of the Match. Miralrio said, “I’m not happy with having the best stats because those stats didn’t translate into goals and it also felt like the team as a whole just made some mistakes that lead to the loss.”
Filerman managed to shine with fancy footwork and his continuous readiness to score. When asked how he felt about his individual performance during the game he said, “I would like to get on the ball more and get open for the my teammates more.”
The Monarchs ended the night with 8 shots and 3 yellow cards, while the 49ers had 13 shots and 1 yellow card. Old Dominion will hit the road on Sept. 20 to face off against VCU for their first away game. ODU and VCU have had a long standing rivalry with one another, meaning the pressure is on for Tuesday.
