Hello Shaka's! The Losing Streak Continues with Less Than Jake
A two-night takeover at Shaka’s Live! in Virginia Beach will take place Tuesday and Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. Less Than Jake will be celebrating 20 years of their Capitol Records release, “Losing Streak,” kicking off the festivities. The second night will feature “Hello Rockview.”
“Losing Streak” was released at a time when major labels like Capitol had plenty of money to spend and employed people who enjoyed bands such as Less Than Jake, explained guitarist and vocalist Chris DeMakes.
“They had marketing dollars, they were promoting you to get on the radio. That money doesn’t exist these days from record sales,” DeMakes said on the differences today in the industry.
Their sophomore release on Capitol, “Hello Rockview” would be their last. The band recorded a third album for the label, yet were dropped, and in the words of DeMakes, they, “slapped the Fat Wreck Chords logo on it.”
The band, as well as Capitol, had lost interest in each other at similar times. Fat Wreck Chords has since been a perfect fit, as they have used that label to release their albums up to their most recent, 2013’s “See the Light.”
“We were touring so much back then – it was such a crazy time,” DeMakes said.
The band was in England at the time and saw the opportunity to leave Capitol.
“We sent probably a cassette at that point to Mike and he listened to it and decided to put it out. It was a quick handshake deal.” That deal has held true through 16 years.
The band has been involved in the Vans Warped Tour since two years after the tour’s inception.
“The first [Warped] tour we did was in ’97. We’ve played more shows than any other Warped Tour band and are currently at 437,” DeMakes said.
Those 437 shows have contributed to experience which leads to one of the most pleasurable and jovial performances one could have at a live concert. There are PEZ candy dispensers thrown on stage, toilet paper rolls shot into the crowd and amazing bands as friends playing with Less Than Jake.
Wednesday night features fellow Floridians The Attack as well as New Jersey hardcore legends BIGWIG. “We’ve known BIGWIG and The Attack forever and wanted to play with our friends up the East Coast. We always pick what bands we want to play with and typically at this point it’s our friends.”
The first night in Virginia Beach will feature an all local-opener bill. Jackmove, Averman and False Cape are scheduled to play. Following these three Virginia Beach bands, Less Than Jake hits the stage playing “Losing Streak” in its entirety.
“We’ve always just got onstage and had a good time. We’re going to play those records and then play another five or six more songs – greatest hits, or in our case greatest misses,” DeMakes said.
If you’re looking for a great time and an escape from the world, Shaka’s Live! in Virginia Beach is the place for you Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
“We’ve always had great shows in the Norfolk and Virginia Beach areas and we can’t wait to see you all there next week,” were DeMakes closing words. Tickets for the shows can be purchased online from Ticketfly or in person at Seaside Raw Bar during normal business hours.
