Lady Monarchs Pummel FAU
On the road this past weekend, the Lady Monarchs (12-10, 7-4 C-USA) extended their winning streak rolling over the Florida Atlantic Owls (4-17, 0-10 C-USA), 93-73.
This was their fourth straight win boosting their Conference USA standing. The Owls led the Monarchs by narrow margins in the first two periods, but they did not have the stamina to keep up their lead. The Owls eventually were outmatched by the persistence of Coach Karen Barefoot.
“We just had to find a way to get back to being us. They are a team that can score. All of them. We were shooting too fast and then we were able to utilize Jennie in different ways, like playing her inside. We had 50 paint points, which was huge, but what I thought the biggest adjustment was that we pressed coming out of halftime,” Coach Barefoot said.
Monarch powerhouse guard Jennie Simms once again showcased her talents on the court by scoring an astonishing 41 points, grabbing 12 rebounds and delivering six assists. Simms third 40 point game of her career sets the all-time ODU record. Forward Destinee Young added another double-double by scoring 16 points and hauling in 14 rebounds.
Collectively, the Owls accumulated nine team fouls with Owl Sasha Cedeno fouling out after only 22 minutes of gameplay. Cedeno contributed 20 points, six rebounds and three assists before being benched, but it still was no match for the Monarchs animated offense.
“We did a great job of really forcing tough shots. We got calm with our offense and were able to execute. We held them to only 25 points in the second half and that, to me, is Lady Monarch Basketball,” Coach Barefoot said.
This comfortable win cannot be celebrated for long as the Monarchs must prepare to battle the Middle Tennesse Lady Raiders Feb. 9 to defend their winning Conference USA record.
