Monarchs Put Away 49ers With Second Half Run

ODU finished the game on a 22-2 run to blow out the Charlotte 49ers, 72-48. The 24-point victory was the Monarchs largest margin of the season. Sophomore Ahmad Caver performed well once again scoring 17 points and dishing out eight assists.
“The guys know that we’ve challenged them. We haven’t put together a string,” ODU head coach Jeff Jones said.
Charlotte (11-14, C-USA 5-9) was out of sync all night long turning the ball over 18 times. The lone bright spot for the 49ers was their freshman guard Jon Davis who scored more than half of their points with his 26. Davis was 8-for-20 from the field.
“Guarding him it was just me, our team played great help defense,” Caver said about guarding Davis.
At the half, ODU (16-10, C-USA 9-5) led 32-25 with Jordan Baker, Zoran Talley and Ahmad Caver each scoring six points.
With under 16 minutes remaining in the second half, ODU pushed the lead to 38-27 but Charlotte countered with an 11-2 run to cut the deficit to two. That would be the closest the 49ers would get as the Monarchs turned up the pressure in the game’s final 10 minutes behind the energetic crowd at The Ted.
“Down the stretch, our defense was terrific,” Jones said.
Brandan Stith nearly had a double-double with his 12 points and nine rebounds.
“Our guys were excited to play, our energy and enthusiasm were great tonight. We really finished the game strong,” Jones said.
ODU dominated every aspect of the game which is why they led for 35:16 of the contest. The Monarchs won the battle in the paint 40-13, had a significant advantage from their bench with 26 points compared to Charlottes two, turned the ball over just six times and outrebounded the 49ers 43-32.
Up next for ODU are two more home games: Feb. 23 against Marshall at 8 p.m. and on Feb. 25 they will honor their seniors against Western Kentucky at 7 p.m.
“We have put together two good games in a row; now we have to put a third one together on Thursday against Marshall,” Jones said.
