Sweet victory, Monarchs win 88-46

Saturday evening the Old Dominion Monarchs hosted Bowling Green in their seventh game of the regular season. The Monarchs trampled over BU winning 88-46.
Old Dominion took an early lead against BG in the first quarter and worked tirelessly to maintain it through halftime. Over the past few games, the Monarchs switched their slow offensive game into a new and improved fast pace. Although they’ve had a few more mistakes since the switch, it has become beneficial for the Monarchs these past weeks.
In addition to their offensive style change, head coach Jeff Jones has begun experimenting with using his entire roster. Jones still relies on key players like BJ and Brandan Stith, but has opted to include a few “bench warmers.” This game specifically, Jones rotated in forwards Aaron Carver and Stephen Vassor along with guard Xavier Green earlier than usual. The new approach proved to be successful as the Monarchs led entering halftime 39-23.
In the second half the Monarchs achieved their largest lead of the game with 42 points. Brandan Stith led the Monarchs with a double of 21 points and 11 rebounds. Other key player moments for the Monarchs included BJ Stith (15 points) and Xavier Green (14 points). As a team the Monarchs marked 38 points in the paint and 28 bench points.
While it’s still too early to determine if these offensive and roster changes will stick, it is certainly a viable option for the Monarchs this season. The Monarchs will have a one week break as they wrap up to academic semester prior to traveling Connecticut for their next game.
