Monarchs narrowly defeat Southern Miss 68-63

Thursday Feb. 8th, the Old Dominion Men’s Basketball team traveled to Mississippi to take on Southern Miss and maintain their Conference-USA standings. While the win margin was narrow the Monarchs marked another winning defeating Southern Miss 68-63.
Old Dominion set the pace for the game by making the first basket, but Eddie Davis III of Southern Miss followed quickly with a three point shot. However, B.J. Stith did his best to keep ODU in the game, scoring six of their first 13 shots midway through the first half. It wasn’t until the ninth minute the Monarchs would get to showcase their improvement at the free throw line.
With the half rapidly closing, and ODU trailing 19-27 they made a snap decision to switch up their defensive style. The switch to zone defense immediately paid dividends, with a steal and assist by Randy Haynes. These slight adjustments sparked a change in the Monarchs but still left them trailing into halftime 30-39.
B.J Stith led the Monarchs at half with 14 points and two rebounds while Caver gave eight points, two assists. Randy Haynes also marked six rebounds, two assists and a steal.
Coming out of halftime the Monarchs battled to tie the game again, at 50 points, but it was broken when Griffin of Southern Miss hit a three. Both teams battled for the lead, but ultimately Marquis Godwin reclaimed it with a three point shot making the score 60-59.
In the end Brandan Stith helped clinch the win with two late free throws. Overall, the Monarchs were led offensively by B.J Stith (19 points), Marquis Godwin (12 points) and Ahmad Caver (11 points). While being defensively led by Randy Haynes (nine rebounds), B.J. Stith (seven rebounds) and Brandan Stith (five rebounds).
The Monarchs will continue their road travels, playing against LA Tech Saturday Feb. 10th.
